Cottage Electric History

Founded by Ted Thayer Sr. in 1953, Cottage Electric was named for its proximity to Cottage Lake in Woodinville, Washington. With a crew composed of family members and close friends, Ted Sr. began his business by wiring homes, or “cottages,” locally in the Woodinville area. Never one to be afraid of hard work, Ted Sr. turned his start-up business into a solid company that supported his family and the families of his employees over the years. Cottage Electric was incorporated in 1959.
Weathering the ups and downs of the economy and construction industry, Cottage Electric remained stable and worked on a large variety of projects in King and Snohomish counties and throughout Washington State. The 1970s saw a boom in government-funded multi-family housing, and Cottage Electric was on the job in locations from Bellevue to Yakima, Coulee City to Wapato.
During this time period, Ted Thayer Jr. began to work in the family business. Starting at the bottom of the heap, Ted Jr. learned the trade as a teen and college student. After earning his business degree from Seattle Pacific University in 1978 and completing his formal electrical training at CITC in 1983, Ted Jr. joined his father in the business full time, bringing new ideas and energy to the company. Ted Jr. earned his State of Washington Electrical Administrator’s license in 1986.
The father-son duo expanded their business into upper end custom homes, lighting design, and industrial buildings. The combined expertise in residential, commercial, and industrial work, new and remodeling, gave Cottage Electric the advantage of being able to draw from a variety of markets, thus surviving some of the leaner times in the construction industry.

Ted Sr. formally retired in 1991, but continued to work part time until 20901. Ted Sr. passed away in 2002.

Ted Jr. continues the family tradition, working with both contractors and homeowners. His crew of skilled electricians receives rave reviews from customers on their work in the field. Cottage Electric has also earned a stellar reputation with Department of Labor and Industries inspectors for their exceptional quality of work.
